Colorado officials react to Conn. elementary shooting

DENVER — Politicians and community leaders in Colorado are reacting to news of the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school Friday.

Denver Public Schools superintendent Tom Boasberg released a statement saying “This is a time of intense sorrow and anxiety for all school communities.”

Boasberg talked about security measures at Denver schools including how every school restricts building access to one door, which must be monitored at all times during the school day.

“We will be working with all schools in the coming days to emphasize the importance of vigilance on all safety issues and doing regular reviews with staff of all safety plans,” he said.

DPS spokeswoman Kristy Armstrong said school officials wanted to maintain a calm atmosphere so students were not told about the shooting.

Two More Public CNG Stations To Open In Weld County Next Week

Two more Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations will open next week – one in Kersey and one in Fort Lupton – bringing the total number of public CNG stations in Weld County to four.

“We are excited to reach this milestone,” said Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer, who formed the Weld County Natural Gas Coalition in 2009. “One of the goals of the Coalition was to create an alternative fuel corridor between the Denver metro area and Wyoming. With the opening of these two stations, Weld County and the Natural Gas Coalition have reached that goal.”

On Tuesday, December 18, 2012, the Coalition will celebrate the opening of the Fort Lupton station with a grand opening ceremony at 2:00 p.m. The station, owned by ZeitEnergy, will be the first public CNG station to be located in the southeastern part of the county. On Thursday, December 20, 2012, a fourth CNG station, also owned by ZeitEnergy, will open in Kersey with a 2:00 p.m.

Flu season ramping up early, could be bad, experts say

DENVER — Flu season is off to its earliest start in nearly a decade–and experts say it could get really ugly this year.

The Centers for Disease Control says the main strain infecting people right now can make them sicker than other types.

But that’s not the case in Colorado.

For Judith Phillips, of Denver, a second of pain now, means preventing days of pain later.

“The longest I was sick was a week. I decided that was it. I got a flu shot and so far, knock on wood, I haven’t gotten sick yet,” says Phillips, about getting her seventh flu shot in seven years at Guardian Urgent Care at Broadway and Ellsworth Ave. in Denver.

Phillips heeds the warning about getting a flu shot because we’re entering what could be the worst flu season in years.

CDOT to test using lights to control I-70 traffic

DENVER – CDOT is going to try using traffic control lights to regulate the flow of traffic on Interstate 70 at the Eisenhower tunnel this winter.

The lights will be familiar to any metro area commuter who tries to get onto I-25 during rush hour.

The lights will be placed on the west side of the tunnel. They will cycle every four to eight seconds so that vehicles will only have to stop briefly before being allowed to enter the tunnel.

CDOT will use flags for the first test on Dec. 8. If the program works well, they will install permanent lights.
