Fort Lupton and Kersey CNG Stations Open in Weld County

The total number of public Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations located in Weld County reached four this week with station openings in Fort Lupton and in Kersey.

On Tuesday, December 18, 2012, The North Station, located at 7984 U.S. 85 in Fort Lupton, opened its CNG fueling station. Fort Lupton Mayor Tommy Holton and Councilmember Zo Hubbard attended the ribbon cutting ceremony and fueled Fort Lupton’s first CNG vehicle.

On Thursday, December 20, 2012, Kramer’s Wedge Store, located at 103 Hill St. in Kersey, became the fourth public CNG station in the county. Both stations are owned by Zeit Energy and mark a milestone for the Weld County Smart Energy program.

The other two CNG stations, located in Firestone and Greeley, are owned by SkyBlu.

“With stations now located in Firestone, Fort Lupton, Kersey and Greeley, drivers will be able to fuel with CNG throughout the county,” said Kirkmeyer.

Two more Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations will open next week – one in Kersey and one in Fort Lupton – bringing the total number of public CNG stations in Weld County to four.

“We are excited to reach this milestone,” said Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer, who formed the Weld County Natural Gas Coalition in 2009. “One of the goals of the Coalition was to create an alternative fuel corridor between the Denver metro area and Wyoming. With the opening of these two stations, Weld County and the Natural Gas Coalition have reached that goal.”

On Tuesday, December 18, 2012, the Coalition will celebrate the opening of the Fort Lupton station with a grand opening ceremony at 2:00 p.m. The station, owned by ZeitEnergy, will be the first public CNG station to be located in the southeastern part of the county. On Thursday, December 20, 2012, a fourth CNG station, also owned by ZeitEnergy, will open in Kersey with a 2:00 p.m.

Liquefied Natural Gas Trucks Save County Dollars

Liquefied Natural Gas Trucks Save County Dollars

WELD COUNTY, CO – As part of its Smart Energy Plan, Weld County is in the process of converting its government fleet vehicles to natural gas vehicles – both Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). On Wednesday, three of the county’s four LNG trucks were on hand at the County Administration Building.

“We are excited about the conversion,” said Commissioner Barbara Kirkmeyer. “Natural gas vehicles are more efficient and require less maintenance which equates to lower costs for the county.”

The county received its first LNG truck in July 2012 and has already realized a 22% reduction in fuel costs which will equate to approximately $25,000 in fuel savings per year per truck. “Over the life of the truck, we are expecting to save an estimated $100,000 on fuel alone – that’s per truck,” said Jay McDonald, Division Supervisor for Weld County’s Department of Public Works.

WELD COUNTY, CO – When Weld County Chemist Mark Thomas speaks about his office’s newest instrument, there is a tinge of excitement in his voice. “We are talking about testing parts per billion,” Thomas said. “That is like saying we can measure something that is as small as one eyedropper drop of water in an Olympic-sized swimming pool.”

Thomas, who works in Weld County’s Department of Public Health and Environment laboratory, is referring to the county’s new gas chromatograph and mass spectrometer instrument which will enable the county to provide free ground-water testing for individuals concerned about potential impacts to their wells from oil and gas activity near their property.

“This instrument will analyze a water sample for volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs, and will produce a report as to what level those compounds exist – if they exist at all,” said Thomas.

Stage 2 Fire Restrictions Remain in Effect in Douglas County

On July 8th, 2012 Governor Hickenlooper rescinded Executive Order D 2012-029 which was enacted on June 14, 2012 and placed the State of Colorado on a statewide fire ban.  However, the rescinding of Executive Order of D 2012-029 has no impact on Douglas County Ordinance No. O-003-001 and the Douglas County Ordinance will remain in effect.
